The hills are alive with sound and music – in Build M35

22nd October, 2015

Did you hear that? A tumbleweed, I think. And crickets chirping away in the distance. It’s been a little while since my last entry. But like a submarine I’ve been making strong progress out of sight, and this is what I’ve come up with. Formula XD Build M35, now with audio and music and a number of bug fixes!

First of all, here’s the build. It comes with an up-to-date readme file. Definitely take a skim through that if you haven’t played a previous version.

I won’t go into too many specifics this time, because I’m writing this on a time budget. Today’s the day I demonstrate the game at Game Bridge’s START NE/W GAME event in Middlesbrough, and I set off in about three or four hours. Wish me luck!

The button sound effects for the menus are all more or less placeholders, and there needs to be a bit more going on at the beginning of testing and at max game speed, but the SFX in the game are more or less in the same state you should expect to find them at release, apart from volume sliders and that kind of thing.

The music took a while to get right, I hope you like it well enough. Since it only plays (and lasts as long as) medium game speed, I wrote a nifty little system for keeping track of where you are in the song and resuming from the beginning of the most recent section.

That’s it, really. Play it, and if you like it, tell people about it! At least one person you know won’t tell you to get lost!
