Just jotting down a few words here as I get revved up for another week of work. It’s been a real effort to keep spiralling down to the next-biggest-thing-left-to-do and clear it out of the way, then hit the next one, and so on, and so on.I’ve been working on audio barks for drivers. For some stupid reason I thought it would be cool to have each driver speaking his own language for basic things like “what?” and “hey there!” and “there’s a problem!”, but by the time I was reminded that there are 11 different non-Anglophonic nationalities represented in the game, it was too late. Apologies to those nationalities, I couldn’t get hold of fluent speakers, and it’s not easy to adapt the pronunciation rules for so many different languages all in quick succession. At least I had a friend of mine deliver a kick-ass English performance. That helped a lot.
I’ve also been making improvements to the interface, the AI, and to overall efficiency. The championship initialisation loading screen is down to nine seconds, which is about six seconds to cover all the AI team management and the car performance calculations, then about three seconds to make sure all the cars get to their garages properly. In some cases, I’ve been able to remove the loading screen entirely, which is great, because loading screens get on my nerves, and I’ve seen more loading screens from my game than I expect anyone ever will.
Also I tweaked the speed formula a little and made cars slower off the grid start until I got a ~3% lap time improvement between laps 1 and 2, and then a ~0.5% improvement lap on lap after that. This is not only more realistic, but also means the player can keep an eye out for hotlap notifications.
At that point it was 8pm on Saturday and I decided it would be a good place to stop – so by 3am, when I’d finished redoing my not-quite-satisfactory colour picker graphics, I went to bed.
OK kids, that’s all you get, I’m really tired and I’ve got to do the 30th and final circuit tomorrow. It’ll be set in, I dunno, Spain or something.
